HAPPY NEW YEAR! Force Awakens is dominating as it moves toward potentially dethroning Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all-time. But wait; this is only the beginning. No longer do fans have to wait three years between installments. Because of Lucasfilm’s aggressive and ambitious slate, including audiences’ thirst for more of the Star Wars saga after the seventh, moviegoers need only wait 18 months for the eighth. What’s more? In just less than a year, the first spinoff will hit theaters to expand the already huge universe even more. Whether you’re a die-hard or newbie, here’s what to expect in a few years:
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Releasing 12/16/16, this film will focus on the rebels who banded together to steal the plans for the Death Star. Set in the time between events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it’ll delve more into the ground-war perspective of the fight for the galaxy.
- Targeted for 2018, a Han Solo standalone is in early stages developing, being the origin of the titular character. Needless to say, Harrison Ford won’t be playing the part, but Lucasfilm is casting a wide net to find the right actor to play the young rogue. In addition, a Boba Fett spinoff may be in the works. Perhaps the two will have good ol’ beef early on?
- Of course, we’ll have the eighth and ninth episodes to round up the core. In the sequel, we know Kylo Ren is off to finish his training, Finn is still recovering from injuries, and that the destiny of Rey awaits. It will come 5/26/17 while the conclusion of the trilogy releases somewhere in 2019.
